Hi, I’m Ana — a documentary photographer based in North London.

Here is a little bit about me and why I do what I do

Before committing to life behind the camera, I worked as a lawyer and also spent a number of years working for the UN and NGOs. Working in the humanitarian field took me to live and work in the Middle East and Africa. I was partly drawn to this work because I am deeply curious about other people and places, and I think this is also what led me to photography.

I misspent most of my twenties dancing salsa and tango. Dance taught me about trust, communication and connection - skills that turn out to be surprisingly useful in documentary photography. These days my hobbies have changed as late-night dancing is not hugely compatible with raising small children. When I have time, I play the cello, read a good book, and probably watch too much telly.

I try and embrace the chaos of parenthood in North London, which is far removed from my previous itinerant existence - although I’ve sometimes thought that my hostile environments training was relevant to motherhood. I find that photography helps me make sense of the chaos. It allows me to distil into images what I love about my family when the day-to-day often feels like a blur.

My approach to photographing families is about honesty over perfection, it’s about life with all its mood and emotion, and about children as a force of nature. If that speaks to you, I think we will get along great.
